I am picking on one of my favorite operas, Lucia di Lammermoor. The opening scene is men dressed to look like the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock. They are singing passionately. What Donizetti, the composer may have known but not told was why they were really passionate. Scotland has cold wet hillsides, they wanted a few wee drams, but the intruder raided the strongbox. Now there is passion for ye! :)
